The name of the disorder I am researching is Down syndrome. There are three different types, trisomy 21, mosaic, and translocation. The disorder is caused by an individual having a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. Instead of having 46 chromosomes in each cell, they have 47. The name of the disorder was named after the physician who described the condition, John Langdon Down. Symptoms of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm. There is no standard treatment for Down syndrome. The treatment is based on each individual's physical and intellectual needs as well as his or her personal strengths and limitations. There are support groups for people with Down syndrome like the National Down Syndrome Society. Their mission is to bring acceptance to people with Down syndrome and bring them a better quality of life.
